The tale goes that seven beautiful troll princesses, fleeing from an unwanted suitor, got caught out as the sun rose, turning them into the seven beautiful mountains you see today. We now reach spectacular Trollfjord, only 2 km long, 100 m wide and surrounded by majestic mountains. If possible, we sail inside, where the dramatic landscape inspires images of fairy tales and trolls. Spend the morning exploring Voss, before taking the train for the last bit of your journey to Bergen. Visit the UNESCO-listed Bryggen district with colourful wharfs dating back to the 14th century. Under the dancing skies of the Northern Lights, travel from the cosmopolitan capital, Oslo, to the top of Norway and Europe. Journey along some of the world's most scenic and beautiful railways as you travel through the snow-covered countryside to Bergen via Flam and Voss.

To the north of the fjord, look out for Alkhornet, an imposing example of carbonate rock, with a horn-shaped mount at its peak. This region is home to Arctic fox, Svalbard reindeer, and colonies of guillemots and kittiwakes. You will spend the night at a Longyearbyen hotel, which offers modern comforts in historical surroundings. From Longyearbyen airport, a transfer brings you to the town itself, nestled on the banks of a large, sweeping fjord. Longyearbyen is the largest settlement in Svalbard, though the 2,000 inhabitants here are outnumbered by snowmobiles. Those choosing to stay on board at Kristiansund will cross the open sea to Molde, known as Norway's ‘City of Roses’.

You may enjoy a stroll in the cobblestone alleyways, a bite at an outdoor café or restaurant, a trip on the Fløibanen funicular or a visit to the famous fish market. The town is spread over three islands and known for being Norway’s “Bacalao Capital” for the salted cod that’s dried on the surrounding cliffs, called klippfisk in Norwegian. Today, you’ll be exploring the archipelagos of Lofoten and Vesterålen, real highlights of our Norway scenic route. In the summer months, you can stroll around the still busy city in glorious 24-hour daylight. We make stops at Mehamn and Kjøllefjord during the night before early morning visits to Honningsvåg and Havøysund. We return to the small, bustling port of Båtsfjord and then make for Berlevåg for late evening, crossing paths with the northbound ship.

Although a few people may dress smartly for dinner, there is no formal night and dress tends to be functional onboard. As the ship starts its voyage south, remember that you’ve seen only half of what Norway’s coastline offers. Today it is a modern city with many activities on offer, from an aquarium and several quality museums to the world’s northernmost botanical garden. The city is also a popular place to experience the unique phenomenon of the Midnight Sun. Known for extensive mountain peaks, deep valleys, fast-flowing rivers and thunderous waterfalls, the journey along the valley from Gudvangen to Voss is as beautiful as it sounds.
Under the glorious Midnight Sun, you’ll have even more time to enjoy the stunning views from the deck. Long before explorers set foot on Magdalenefjord, the stunning views were the preserve of wildlife. Today, the scree slopes are breeding grounds for large numbers of Little Auks, and you might also see Arctic Terns, Skuas, Eider Ducks, and Barnacle Geese. In the summer months, the surrounding waters host minke and beluga whales. Scan for seals on the floating sea ice and, if it’s your lucky day, you might catch a glimpse of a polar bear. After breakfast, board the ferry from Flåm to Gudvangen, enjoying the spectacular views as you pass through the narrow Nærøyfjord.
Northern Fulmars, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Atlantic Puffins and guillemots are just some of the species found here in the summer months. A bird sanctuary consisting of about ten islands lies at the inner end of the fjord, and supports breeding populations of protected species such as Pink-footed Geese and Common Eider. The area around Liefdefjord is also a great place to scan for wildlife. The sights and sounds of thousands of sea birds like kittiwakes, terns and eiders fill the sky. As ever, the weather and ice will determine where we land and what activities we’ll do.
Between Stamsund and Svolvær, you can experience life on an organic herb and cheese farm, or visit the Lofoten’s only craft brewery, in Svolvær.
